The Future of MMA: Emerging Trends and Potential Changes in the Sport

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA is hugely popular in many countries around the world. Over the last few decades, the sports has grown as more fans enjoy the athleticism, drama, and skill exhibited by the athletes in the different competitions. But, with popularity comes the need to evolve and grow. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what’s coming for MMA in the coming years?
Women in MMA
Talents like Rhonda Rousey have already made massive headlines in the past, but she, alongside other big names, have left. But this doesn’t mean that the women’s side of this sport has died. Far from it in fact. These days, Women’s MMA is surging in popularity, reaching huge heights and rivaling the men. There are many top fighters like Kennedy Freeman and Dakota Ditcheva, both who are leading the way when it comes to talent in the MMA. Ditcheva in particular, became a well known name after claiming the Women’s Flyweight Championship in 2024.
The Professional Fighters League (PFL), and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), are both doing well when it comes to women in the sport too. There is increased viewership, and more fan engagement each day. With this in mind, it looks like women’s MMA is continuing to grow as we enter 2025.
Technology and MMA
Similar to other sports, technology is having a profound impact on the way MMA operates. There are now community apps which help enhance fan engagement when it comes to training programs. On top of that, there are apps that enable interaction with fighters, to view exclusive content, and even join virtual events.
Another advancement comes in training. Fighters and coaches are able to use AI to make data-driven insights and analytics after a bout. This can help to optimize performance going forward, allowing fighters to better prepare for their upcoming fights and opponents. It also allows for better tracking of progress and to create fight strategies that are more effective.
Technology also makes it easier to stream the sport. There is a wide variety of different platforms that stream the sport making it more accessible. On top of that, it’s now prevalent as a betting option on a growing number of sports betting sites, such as GemBet Sports which offers a variety of MMA betting options, allowing fans to engage beyond just watching fights. Additionally, technology is used to combine betting with live streaming and in-play sports betting options.
Unique and innovative techniques
As MMA by its nature is a combination of different fighting styles and techniques, new fighters are constantly striving to bring something different to the ring. With this in mind, it’s common to see something fresh, often unpredictable when it comes to strange and innovative styles. Fighters like Sharapudin Magomedov have unorthodox styles, like the double-spin back-fist knock out move which was instantly a classic move. Unique approaches and styles like this keep viewers interested. They also showcase what’s possible within the sport and help to keep things interesting. The blend of traditional moves and martial arts is seamlessly blended with creative techniques.
Added income
With the rise of MMA’s popularity comes more money and revenue. As the sport continues to gain traction (its already valued at more than $18 billion yearly), more investors become interested. As such, there is continued opportunities for more MMA promotions, businesses, and even fighters. Sponsorships and revenue streams are growing, with more companies investing. Though it does mean that with some of the broadcast deals ending, tournaments like the UFC are looking for more money. This means that fighters are getting increasingly lucrative deals, furthering their careers. There are also more MMA contests and tournaments. While UFC has been the top dog in the industry, others are rising such as One Championship and PFL. Both are expanding their global reach and introducing the sport to an increasing number of people.
At the moment, there’s a lot going on within the sport. And it’s all very exciting. On top of the new changes and possibilities are a number of up-and-coming fighters that may have a huge impact on the sport as a whole. Keep an eye on fighters like Carlos Prates, Dakota Ditcheva, and Diego Lopes to see what exciting fighting styles and bouts are coming up.
